Cleanup targets toxin nearing Hyannis wells By AMANDA LEHMERT Cape Cod Times (MA) January 9, 2007HYANNIS - By March, county officials hope to build a water treatment plant to clean a plume of perchlorate flowing toward the Mary Dunn well field, a series of wells that feeds the taps in Hyannis. So far, one well in the field tested positive for perchlorate at .55 parts per billion - below the state's drinking water limit of 2 parts per billion. There is no immediate risk to public health, officials said. But concentrations in the plume are as high as 50 parts per billion, county officials said, prompting a $240,000 groundwater cleanup. The plume emanates from the Barnstable County Fire/Rescue Training Facility on Mary Dunn Road. The facility used flares containing perchlorate to ignite training fires until officials discovered the danger last summer. ...
