Navy to haul dirty soil from The FarmThe contaminated dirt in a World War II-era dump will be excavated and sent out of Camp Peary, the CIA training base in York County. BY PATRICK LYNCH Newport News Daily Press (VA) February 16 2007YORK -- The Navy plans to haul away 13,000 dump-truck loads of polluted soil from an old landfill on the secretive Camp Peary. The $5.5 million cleanup project is expected to take two years to complete.It is part of a base-wide effort to environmentally repair more than a dozen sites that are polluted to some degree. Neighbors are in no danger from any contamination found so far at the base, now known as The Farm and used by the CIA, said Navy and state environmental officials during a sparsely attended forum Thursday night to explain the impending work to the public. Technically known as the Armed Forces Experimental Training Activity, the York County base was a training ground for Navy Seabees during World War II and housed up to 40,000 trainees at a time. ...
