Bill would give Laughlin zoning protection

Protection of an area in a 10-mile radius around Laughlin Air Force Base is
the aim of a bill introduced to the Texas Legislature by Rep. Pete P.
Gallego on Thursday.

"Laughlin is a major part of the Del Rio family and this legislation lets
local residents be involved in protecting its future," Gallego said after
he filed the legislation.

Gallego's bill, House Bill No. 3396, would, if passed, amend the Texas
Local Government Code to include a subchapter titled "Zoning Around
Laughlin Air Force Base."

"Orderly development and use of the area is of concern to the entire state
and without adequate development regulations, the area (around the base)
will tend to become congested and to be used in ways that interfere with
the proper use of the area as a secure location for the continuation of a
military establishment," the bill reads.
