Study will focus on encroachment around Fort Rucker By Lance Griffin Dothan Eagle (AL) Augsut 15, 3007As the Wiregrass continues to grow, community leaders hope Fort Rucker’s military mission grows as well. Now, those leaders are teaming up to make sure one growth doesn't harm the other. Representatives from Fort Rucker, the Pentagon and as many as 10 local governments will participate in a study designed to make sure Fort Rocker's military mission doesn't suffer due to the issue of encroachment, a process by which a military base is progressively hemmed in by urban growth, competition for air space and other factors. The Department of Defense felt strongly enough about the issue that it listed encroachment as one of the issues used to determine closure and/or realignment in the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure process. ...
