Textron to pay millions for base cleanup By Amanda Lehmert Cape Cod Times (MA) October 2, 2007BOSTON - The state and federal governments have reached an $8.75 million settlement with a military contractor accused of tainting the Cape's groundwater. Under the settlement, filed in U.S. District Court yesterday, Textron Systems Corp. will pay a record $1 million to the state for natural resources damages, $5.6 million to the Army and $800,000 to the Environmental Protection Agency for cleanup costs, as well as other fees and in-kind services. Textron used the so-called J-3 range at the Massachusetts Military Reservation to test munitions for three decades. The Army removed 3,500 tons of soil tainted with perchlorate and explosives from the area and is currently cleaning up plumes of contaminated groundwater, the Upper Cape's main source of drinking water. ...
