USCG battles hazards in place since Base was built By RALPH GIBBS Kodiak Mirror (AK) May 30, 2008The Coast Guard Base in Kodiak is under a chemical attack. The attack comes not from terrorists or the Russians, but from the past. On Thursday, Base officials invited media representatives to tour the battlefield and discuss the Coast Guard plan to fight the war. The precursors to the chemical problem started about the time the Base was built. "As I understand it, workers that were running the dry cleaners were disposing of (chemicals) in years past by dumping them in the ground," Base commander Capt. Mark Carmel said. "Those practices were stopped … in the late 1980s at the latest." Now the Base is dealing with the aftermath.On April 18, residents of the open-bay transient living quarters were evacuated after officials detected higher-than-normal traces of the chemical toxin tetrachloroethylene (TCE) in a mechanical room in the basement. ...
