Not 'all,' only 'some' State, DOE announce new INL waste agreement By Nate Poppino and David Cooper Magic valley Times-News (ID) July 2, 2008The state of Idaho and the U.S. Department of Energy announced a new long-term deal Tuesday that will lead to removal of some - but not all - transuranic buried waste at the Idaho National Laboratory in eastern Idaho. Under the agreement, Idaho will target a lesser amount of buried waste and in specific areas, rather than all the buried waste that was thrown into unlined pits at the site during Cold War years. Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter announced the deal in Idaho Falls alongside former Govs. Cecil Andrus and Phil Batt, Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden, Idaho INL oversight director Kathleen Trever and James A. Rispoli, U.S. Department of Energy assistant secretary for environmental management. Officials painted the agreement as a way to end squabbles over the amount of waste to remove and actually start removing waste. State officials, who have prevailed so far in court challenges to removal agreements, said any further court battles would waste taxpayer time and money. ...
