Cleanup suspended at former Diamond Magnesium Co. site

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is suspending the cleanup of 
radioactive contamination at a Painesville Township industrial site.
The Army Corps had to halt the cleanup when funding ran out. The group 
spent about $15 million to excavate and remove contaminated soil from 
the former Defense Plant Corp. site, later the Diamond Magnesium Co., at 
720 Fairport Nursery Road.

"We reached the point where we would exceed funding for the project," 
Army Corps of Engineers Project Manager Stephen Buechi said. "We had to 
temporarily pause the cleanup while we secured additional funding for 
the project."

The former magnesium production facility received 1,650 tons of 
contaminated scrap steel drums between 1951 and 1953 from the Lake 
Ontario Ordnance Works. The drums contained radiological material. When 
processed, the material from the drums was used to control chlorine 
emissions from magnesium production.
