Kirtland Jet Fuel Contaminating Groundwater By John Fleck Albuquerque Journal (NM) July 12, 2008Jet fuel from an old underground Kirtland Air Force Base fuel line has reached groundwater near one of Albuquerque's largest water supply areas, in and around the city's Ridgecrest neighborhood, officials said Friday. "It's making its way toward some of our most productive wells," said John Stomp, Water Resources Manager for the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority. The contamination is within 1.5 miles of the nearest city water well, Stomp said. The chemicals in jet fuel can cause cancer, said Baird Swanson, an environmental scientist with the New Mexico Environment Department. The Air Force has known about the problem since February 2007 but did not make it public until Friday, when it announced a $2.8 million effort to drill additional monitoring wells to try to determine how far the jet fuel has spread. The service did not want to make the problem public until there was a plan in place to deal with it, said base spokeswoman Jillian Speake. ...
