Old Suffolk Army air field to be tested to pollutants BY JENNIFER SMITH Long Island Newsday (NY) August 26, 2008The woods west of Francis S. Gabreski Airport are still now, their green quiet broken only by hikers or the rumble of errant all-terrain vehicles. But during World War II this isolated stretch of pine barrens in Westhampton and Speonk rang with gunfire and explosions from military practice ranges that made up 3,120 acres of the former Suffolk County Army Air Field. More than six decades later, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to test soil and groundwater there for traces of rocket fuel, TNT, lead and other harmful substances dating from its wartime use. The tests, scheduled to begin next year, are part of a national effort to address potential contamination at thousands of former defense properties, said Helen Edge, the corps' project manager for the site. The range complex is one of 17 such sites across Long Island where the corps has identified potential hazards ranging from unexploded ordnance to abandoned storage tanks and unsafe buildings. ...
