Study shows high cancer rate among Pratt workers By Leslie Hutchison Meriden Record-Journal (CT) September 19, 2008ROCKY HILL - It's too early to tell if a cancer cluster exists among the nearly 224,000 past and present Pratt & Whitney workers participating in a research study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh. AdvertisementPreliminary results of the $12 million study bankrolled by the jet engine manufacturer were released Thursday night. The study covers employees at eight plants in Connecticut who worked for Pratt & Whitney any time between 1952 and 2001. Gary M. Marsh, a biostatistician with the university's school of health, said the study showed 381 incidences of brain tumors among the workers, 49 of them at the North Haven plant, which shut down in 2001. However, Marsh said the cause of those cancers has not yet been determined. "Overall, there is no evidence of an elevated risk. It's too premature for an identifying cause," he said. ...
