Land Deal Must Keep Homeless By Harry Saltzgaver Long Beach Gazette (CA) January 21, 2009 Due to a legal ruling from the city attorney's office, an effort to seek elimination of a homeless service element for reuse of the Schroeder Hall Army Reserve base has been dropped. Now Fifth District Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske wants to start the entire process over again. Schipske had planned to introduce the motion to ask the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to waive a requirement to accommodate homeless service providers property in order to use the shuttered army reserve base for a new police substation. But a legal opinion by Assistant City Attorney Heather Mahood was issued last week saying the city would essentially have to start the application process over again to make that request. ...
