Dangerous chemicals on move under ammo plant By Todd Krysiak Sauk Prairie Eagle (WI) January 28, 2009 A hazardous waste compound in the soil beneath the Badger Army Ammunition Plant is infiltrating groundwater beneath the former munitions factory ? and it may be on the move. In groundwater tests conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in conjunction with the Army and the contractor SpecPro, a "plume" of higher concentrations of the chemical DNT was detected in test wells scattered around the plant in 2006 and 2007. In response, DNR hydrologist Hank Kuehling said the department increased monitoring efforts and proposed drilling new wells outside the plant's boundaries to detect the movement of the chemical, which is known to cause cancer at certain concentrations. Since then, he said the levels have declined in the test wells. ...
