Subject: [CPEO-MEF] MUNITIONS: DNT from Badger Plant (WI)
Dangerous chemicals on move under ammo plant

A hazardous waste compound in the soil beneath the Badger Army
Ammunition Plant is infiltrating groundwater beneath the former
munitions factory ? and it may be on the move.

In groundwater tests conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural
Resources in conjunction with the Army and the contractor SpecPro, a
"plume" of higher concentrations of the chemical DNT was detected in
test wells scattered around the plant in 2006 and 2007.

In response, DNR hydrologist Hank Kuehling said the department increased
monitoring efforts and proposed drilling new wells outside the plant's
boundaries to detect the movement of the chemical, which is known to
cause cancer at certain concentrations. Since then, he said the levels
have declined in the test wells.
