Superfund status for Camp Bonneville? EPA says it is reviewing petition for greater federal oversight By Erik Robinson The Columbian (WA) February 6, 2009Citing a lack of oversight and spiraling costs, a local environmental activist on Thursday petitioned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to declare an old Army artillery range a Superfund cleanup site before it’s turned into a county park.
Dvija Michael Bertish, representing Columbia Riverkeeper and the Rosemere Neighborhood Association, noted that the EPA opted out of oversight of the cleanup of Camp Bonneville in 2003.
"Members of the public firmly believe that this project requires EPA to re-engage and list this site on the National Priorities List to achieve a higher level of oversight and to ensure public health and safety," Bertish wrote in the petition dated Tuesday.
