Firing of lead bullets expands on MMR ranges By George Brennan Cape Cod Times (MA) February 7, 2009CAMP EDWARDS - The National Guard can start firing lead bullets on two more small-arms ranges at the Massachusetts Military Reservation. The federal Environmental Protection Agency yesterday approved a second pilot program to allow soldiers to train on the Kilo and Juliet ranges on the base. Both ranges have already been equipped with the STAPP system, a bullet trap that contains the lead and protects the soil and groundwater. The EPA made the decision based on the success of another bullet trap system already in place on the Tango range at the base, EPA spokesman Jim Murphy said. That system, though there have been some problems with it collecting rain water, has worked nearly flawlessly, according to environmental and Guard officials. ...
