Oregon Army National Guard shuts Cottage Grove armory

COTTAGE GROVE -- This is a can-do place.

New hospital? Can do. New high school? Can do. New armory?

War is not only pulling the Oregon Army National Guard away, it's also helping build bigger and more expensive military centers.

Last Friday, the Guard closed the landmark Cottage Grove Armory it has occupied since 1931. After speeches and sheet cake on the peeling steps, troops headed to their new $38 million headquarters in Springfield, a building dedicated to the global war on terrorism.

The state will assess the property and offer it first to state agencies and then for general sale. The townspeople, who built a new hospital after the old one left, and a new high school, would like to see a community center in the building. The roof is only 10 years old. The leaks, not so bad. And think of the history.
