Former munition site in Ankeny to be cleaned up

Plans to clear environmental contaminants from the 38-acre former 
landfill and lagoon in the Prairie Trail development in Ankeny took 
another step forward last week.

The Environmental Protection Agency's settlement says that John Deere 
Des Moines Works of Deere & Company, the city of Ankeny, and the U.S. 
Army Corps of Engineers will jointly spend an estimated $9.1 million on 
cleanup at the site.

The EPA's decision last week cements an agreement worked out by the 
parties involved last fall that roughs out costs. Ankeny City Attorney 
Amy Beattie said officials won't be sure of the exact bill breakdown 
until bids are finalized for the work.
