Corzine OKs transfer document needed for officials to purchase GSA depot 
in Hillsborough

Gov. Jon S. Corzine has approved the early transfer document needed for 
township and Somerset County officials to jointly purchase the 369-acre 
General Services Administration Belle-Mead Depot.

Fearing the site could be auctioned to a developer, the Township 
Committee voted unanimously in 2006 to join Somerset County in buying 
the depot on Mountain View Road for $17.5 million. Township and county 
officials envision transforming the property into a park and recreation 
area, with portions of the property zoned for research and development.

Last week, Corzine approved a Finding of Suitability for Early Transfer 
(FOSET), which allows the property to be transferred to the township and 
county prior to environmental remediation. The environmentally 
compromised property contains low levels of surface soil contamination 
caused by railroad ballast, and oil used to control dust on the site. 
Officials want to begin cleaning up the property this year.

Somerset County and township officials have already entered into an 
agreement with the federal government where most of the $15.735 million 
in funds being used to purchase the 369-acre site will be returned in 
the form of an escrow account for the environmental remediation of the 
property.
