Landfill trespassing, toxicity worries draw concerns in Middlesex Borough By JARED KALTWASSER East Brunswick Scarlet Scuttlebutt (NJ) February 23, 2009Borough officials plan to increase anti-trespassing measures at the site of a former municipal landfill that was contaminated with uranium ore. Representatives from the borough met with officials from the state Department of Transportation, the federal Department of Energy and the Army Corps of Engineers on Feb. 3 for an update on the former Middlesex Landfill site on Mountain Avenue between Wellington Street and Pershing Avenue, according to Councilwoman Debra DeVuyst. The site was contaminated in the 1940s when uranium-contaminated soil was disposed of there. The soil came from a nearby plant that was used in the development of the atomic bomb. The Department of Energy cleaned up the site in the 1980s, and the site is listed as managed by the department's Office of Legacy Management. An online fact sheet on the site indicates that it is released for unrestricted use. ...
