Young patients live in former barracksState hospital's new psychiatric unit doesn't have enough beds to meet the need. By Lynn Bonner Charlotte Observer (NC) February 25, 2009BUTNER - The state has spent about $200,000 to refurbish parts of a former Army barracks to house children committed for psychiatric care, while a section set aside for children in a new state mental hospital remains vacant. ...The children have spent some time each week in the new hospital's gym. The Umstead building the children were using for play was closed recently because of concern about mold and asbestos contamination. "Danger" signs posted on the building's doors warn of cancer and lung disease hazards. Respirators and protected clothing are required for entry. The state expects an environmental assessment of the building to be completed this week.
