Cleanup of Former Defense Plant Stalls Bud Lowell WXXI Public Radio (Rochester, NY) March 17, 2009ROCHESTER, NY - The owners of a former defense plant in the Town of Greece say they're withdrawing from a voluntary agreement to clean up toxic waste left there from years of heavy manufacturing. The State Department of Environmental Conservation says that doesn't mean chemicals will remain in the soil and water there, but it will probably take years longer to remove them. 4800 Dewey Avenue is a huge metal-sided building on the south end of Round Pond just off Lake Ontario. It was the Odenbach Shipbuilding Company when it made landing craft in World War Two. Later it became Air Force Plant 51 and made parts for B-52 bombers. When it was sold to private owners in 1959, contamination remained from solvents, PCBs, cyanide from electroplating and various metal compounds. The pollution is a concern because it's adjacent to the lake and the surrounding wetlands. ....
