Base cleanup worries watchdog Navy and MRRA affirm commitment to oversight after grant funds expire By Rachel Ganong Brunswick Times Record (ME) March 26, 2009BRUNSWICK - Citizens involved with environmental oversight at Brunswick Naval Air Station are questioning who will monitor cleanup after the base closes in 2011.
The job now falls, in part, to a citizen watchdog group that's about to lose its funding. However, both Navy and civilian redevelopment officials affirm that work will continue to ensure that environmental contaminants accumulated over six decades of Navy use won't pose a public threat or deter base reuse efforts.
With Capt. William Fitzgerald, the base's commanding officer, Suzanne Johnson co-chairs the Brunswick Naval Air Station's Restoration Advisory Board. Johnson also serves as a member of the base environmental watchdog group called Brunswick Area Citizens for a Safe Environment.
