Squabbling stalls South Weymouth Naval Air Station redevelopment By Jack Encarnacao Quincy Patriot Ledger (MA) June 13, 2009 WEYMOUTH -First, there was talk of turning it into an airport, then a mega-mall and office complex, ideas that amounted to nothing.
Then along came developer LNR Property Corp. with plans for a complex of residential villages, a movie and TV studio, retail shops, a golf course and a sports complex, and it looked as if the former South Weymouth Naval air Station would have a new life.
But more than a decade after voters in Weymouth, Abington and Rockland, where the former base is located, approved the redevelopment plan, the future of the base is as uncertain as ever.
The project's completion date has been pushed nearly into 2020. The base's overseers, South Shore Tri-Town Development Corp., says it fears it may go out of business this year. Deadline after deadline to cut a final deal with the Navy has passed.
