[If I recall correctly, this is a site where the Army did NOT agree to
clean the site to the reuse planned by the community. Instead, it
planned to clean to standards allowing for a continuing industrial use,
so the developer would have been stuck with a high cleanup bill. - LS]
Large park suggested for TCAAP site after development plan fell through Smaller development still possible By Brady Gervais Pioneer Press (MN) June 13, 2009After learning it would be too costly to turn a portion of the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant property into a mix of homes and shops, some Arden Hills leaders and residents say the land should become a grand park. A 585-acre slice of the sprawling former plant was supposed to be sold late this year to the city, which would then sell it to a developer. But last month, Ryan Cos. pulled out and Arden Hills withdrew its offer to buy it from the U.S. Army. The developer said the high environmental costs made the development unrealistic. "From the very start, I've always wanted that space to be parkland," said Council Member Fran Holmes, adding this is the chance to give the region a large park. Opinions vary on how much of the parcel should be park. The last plan called for 1,750 homes or apartments on the site. Some backers still would like to see development, but on a smaller scale. ...
