NEW ROCHELLE - The Army Corps of Engineers will hold a public hearing tonight to review environmental impacts of cleaning up PCB contamination at Davids Island.

Davids Island is an 80-acre island in the Long Island Sound off of New Rochelle, and the former home to a military base, Fort Slocum. The base closed in the 1960s, leaving behind buildings and other infrastructure from the base. The Army Corps of Engineers finished tearing down the buildings and removing asbestos in January. Sampling of surface and sub-surface soils revealed polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination in six areas on the island.

An interim removal action is proposed to clean up the PCB contamination.
