EPA to oversee cleanup of hazardous chemicals at McGuire Air Force Base BY JOE TYRRELL NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM September 18, 2009The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced it will oversee additional investigation and cleanup of hazardous chemicals at McGuire Air Force Base in Burlington County. The EPA added the 3,500-acre site by Wrightstown to its Superfund list in 1999. Investigators identified four sources of wastes in 1984, including the release of nickel and mercury into bodies of water, plus PCBs and inorganic hazardous substances in soil and water and volatile organic compounds that easily evaporate into air. But those initial findings comprise only "a portion of the area of concern" on the base, which began as a U.S. Army facility in 1937 but has been under Air Force control since 1948. ....
