EPA endorses monitoring plan for three groundwater plumes

CAMP EDWARDS - The Army will continue to monitor three groundwater 
plumes contaminated with perchlorate and Royal Demolition Explosives, 
known as RDX, for the next several years under a plan endorsed by the 
federal Environmental Protection agency.

Military training and fireworks are believed to be responsible for the 
contamination, officials said. While the plumes are dissipating 
naturally, EPA team leader Lynn Jennings said federal officials want the 
military to continue monitoring them and to make sure people living in 
the areas of contamination are not tapping into the water.

One of the plumes is on the western boundary of the base and is 
migrating toward Monument Beach. A second is contained to the base and a 
third is in the northwest corner near the Upper Cape Regional Technical 
High School. The Upper Cape Tech plume is headed toward the Cape Cod 
Canal, but does not pose a health risk, environmental officials said.
