Pollution settlement funds land purchases

Money from a military contractor partially to blame for fouling Upper 
Cape drinking water will be used to preserve land and improve water quality.

State officials announced this week that four projects have been 
selected for funding from a $1.3 million settlement with Textron, a 
munitions contractor that tested weapons at Camp Edwards for nearly 
three decades. That testing tainted the soil with perchlorate and Royal 
Demolition Explosives, also known as RDX, forcing the removal of 3,500 
tons of soil. It is also responsible for plumes of contaminated 
groundwater that are part of the massive cleanup under way at 
Massachusetts Military Reservation.

State environmental officials, who control the Textron cash, will use 
$259,000 to purchase 13.7 acres in the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge 
on Lovell's Lane and $61,200 to purchase 5.3 acres known as the Thicket 
Run property for the Sandwich Water District. That property should be 
under contract by the end of this month, Dale Young, director of the 
state Natural Resources Damages program, told the Massachusetts Military 
Reservation Cleanup Team Wednesday night.
