Digging up the past at proving grounds By Stephanie Harris-Smith Hope Star (AR) October 29, 2009 Second of two parts.Hope, Ark. - With the modern technology used by Zapata Engineering and the use of geophysical (DGM) mapping, locating possibly dangerous items from the World War II Southwestern Proving Ground and outside the proving grounds in what was known as the “buffer” zone is possible in a more in depth way than in previous studies. Over the last two years a group of 14 people, Zapata personnel, contracted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers conducted an investigation on two sections of the proving grounds in order to see what types of densities and hazards are still in the area, according to Zapata Project Manager Larry Hudgins. Hudgins along with Brian Hodge, senior UXO supervisor, reported the results of the investigations to the public at a SW Proving Ground Restoration Advisory Board meeting earlier this week. ...
