EPA in dispute with Navy over Moffett Field cleanup By Diana Samuels Palo Alto Daily News (CA) December 7, 2010The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is squaring off against the Navy for refusing to address toxic vapors at Moffett Field. But the Navy insists the cleanup should be done by NASA, Moffett Field's current operator. NASA, meanwhile, apparently isn't interested in taking on the work. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Navy and several semiconductor, electronics and other high-tech companies leaked toxins -- primarily the solvent trichloroethene -- into soil and groundwater in the Middlefield-Ellis-Whisman area of Mountain View, as well as parts of Moffett Field. Toxic vapors have now risen into the air inside buildings in the area, according to the EPA. The agency says it doesn't believe the vapors pose immediate health risks, but it is concerned about long-term effects. ...
