‘Significant’ number of munitions left at Marpi Point Field, says Army Corps contractor

THERE’S a significant number of munitions left at the former Marpi Point Field on Saipan.

U.S. Army Corps contractor Parsons, through project manager Don M. Silkebakken, led a public hearing at American Memorial Park on Thursday night where they shared updates about the project and what are still in the pipeline.

Silkebakken said that there remains a significant number of munitions at the Mapi Point Field.

He noted in his presentation that in 1962-1964, the U.S. Navy EOD had conducted a cleanup of the site and had destroyed over two million pounds of munitions; however, there’s an estimated over 6.5 million pounds of munitions left in Marpi at the time.
