Seacoast lawmakers seek to tighten, add PFC regulations By Max Sullivan Seacoast Online (NH) October 8, 2017 PORTSMOUTH -- Seacoast lawmakers are working to make state regulations on perfluorochemicals more stringent this legislative session as concerns persist over the contaminants’ impact on state and local drinking water. State Rep. Mindi Messmer, D-Rye, filed two bills that would add regulations and create new criteria for PFCs detected in local drinking water. PFCs are contaminants considered possible carcinogens and are found in multiple household items like Teflon. One bill seeks to add perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS), to the list of PFCs regulated by the state. Only perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluoro-octanesulfonate (PFOS) are currently regulated by the state and the federal Environmental Protection Agency with a health advisory level set at 70 parts per trillion. Messmer said the state of New Jersey has proposed a separate drinking water standard for PFNA due to concerns about its toxicity. She said PFHxS has the longest half-life in the human body of any PFC and has been found in people living near Pease International Tradeport where the city of Portsmouth’s Haven well was shut down in 2014 due to PFC contamination. The U.S. Air Force has since paid for a carbon filtration system at the former base that is in a pilot testing phase. … For the entire article, see http://www.seacoastonline.com/news/20171008/seacoast-lawmakers-seek-to-tighten-add-pfc-regulations -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center P.O.
