Ellsworth identifies contaminated drinking wells near base

A private well survey by Ellsworth Air Force base has identified nine private wells south of the base with concentrations of two perflourinated compounds above the Environmental Protection Agency’s health advisory limits.

In 2016, the EPA set a combined lifetime health advisory limit for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) at 70 parts per trillion, equal to about three-and-a-half drops of water in an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Commonly found in products including Teflon, Scotchgard, Gore-Tex and food packaging, the chemicals are also found in the firefighting foam used by the base to combat petroleum-based fires. The Air Force began using the foam around 1970.

All affected property owners and residents have been notified by base personnel and provided alternative drinking water. The testing is part of the base’s ongoing investigation to assess potential drinking water contamination from PFOS and PFOA.
