Air Force finds high levels of toxins in water at Luke base

The U.S. Air Force will begin testing water in the area surrounding Glendale’s Luke Air Force Base on Wednesday after tests revealed high levels of toxins in the base’s water supply. 

The elevated levels of potentially harmful chemicals were found in the base's surface and groundwater, but not in the drinking water. The water on base is still safe to drink, according to Becky Heyse, a base spokeswoman.

The toxic chemicals seeped into the base’s water, and potentially contaminated water outside of the base, for decades as the base fought fires with a type of foam that contains high levels of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

A 2017 site inspection found an elevated level of the chemicals in the groundwater at several areas sampled on the base, according to results of the inspection that the Air Force is releasing Wednesday. Luke provided information from the results to The Arizona Republic ahead of the release.
