Despite A $50M Cleanup, Residents Still Bear The Costs Of Peterson AFB’s Water Contamination

There’s nothing particularly unusual about the field of recently harvested alfalfa at Venetucci Farm except that for many decades it was a pumpkin patch. The Venetucci family used to grow pumpkins here to give away to Colorado Springs children on Halloween. 

When the Pikes Peak Community Foundation took over the farm in 2006, they continued the tradition and ran a small nonprofit organic vegetable farm - until they were blindsided by contamination traced to nearby Peterson Air Force Base.

“Nobody really understood what the firefighting foam was,” said Sam Clark, the foundation’s director of philanthropy.

The U.S. Air Force has spent hundreds of millions to clean up contamination from the toxic firefighting foam used for training exercises on bases across the country. The foam contains some of a family of compounds broadly known as PFAS chemicals. PFAS have long been found in applications from coating nonstick cookware and stain-resistant fabrics to the firefighting foam, which has been used across industries for its track record of efficiently extinguishing petroleum-based fires.
