Toxins found in water sources near US bases in Okinawa by Tamami Kawakami Mainichi Japan September 16, 2019 NAHA -- Two chemical compounds that may increase the risk of cancer have been found in high concentrations in water sources near United States military bases in the southernmost prefecture of Okinawa, the prefectural government has announced. Surveys found high concentrations of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The Okinawa Prefectural Government believes there is a high probability that the sources of the toxins are the military bases.
