Air Force: Pocasset Groundwater Contamination Will Last Years

Contaminants found in groundwater in Pocasset will continue to survive for decades to come, according to an Air Force analysis.

The contamination is the result of oil spills at the Otis Rotary in 1997 and 2000. The spills were contained using firefighting foam that contained hazardous chemicals.

Ms. Forbes said that PFOS and PFOA contamination starts at the rotary, where the rollovers happened and extends all the way down to Hen Cove. The highest concentration levels of the contaminants, she said, continue to be at the source area, the Otis Rotary. Decades after the initial incidents, the dangerous chemicals have not dissolved in groundwater and been flushed out of the area, she said.
