SAVANNAH, Ga. — A Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) will be established for a Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) at Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Buxton Beach Access.
This comes amid an ongoing beach closure at the site because of the discovery of petroleum contamination.

The decision to establish the RAB comes after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, received overwhelming support for the idea from the public. The Corps released a survey on Nov. 4 and received 90 responses, the majority of which indicated they would like an RAB to be established.

“The preliminary survey results indicate an overwhelming desire to establish the RAB,” said USACE, Savannah District, commander, Col. Ron Sturgeon. “My team will document this determination and take the next steps to ensure the appropriate community representatives are on the board, and they will set a date for the kick-off meeting.”

The board will be made up of community members and representatives from the Corps of Engineers and will provide input on the cleanup of the Buxton Naval Facility.
