Midway Tests Show No Threat From Toxics
Daly City tenants dispute findings

Residents of a Daly City housing project -- many of them certain they
have been made sick by chemicals beneath their homes -- do not need to
be relocated, according to a report released yesterday by state and
federal officials.

Five carcinogens found at the Midway Village apartment complex pose no
threat to public health, according to a report by the state's Department
of Toxic Substances Control, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
and an independent contractor. Tenants will therefore stay put, whether
they like it or not.

After seven months of testing, the agencies concluded that the chemicals
detected in the complex, which is adjacent to a Superfund site, pose no
health threats to residents.

"If you look at all of the contaminants from all of the samples, none of
them exceed EPA screening goals," said Ron Baker, spokesman for the
Department of Toxic Substances Control. "In layman's terms: (the soil)
isn't a problem."
