Last week, 400 doctors in the Binghamton area and northern Pennsylvania began receiving information kits from the state Department of Health that include fact sheets about pollution in Endicott and case studies of illnesses related to chemical exposure. The inten tion is to inform local care providers of the problem affecting Endicott homes and businesses so they are better able to diagnose illnesses that could be related, said Claire Pospisil, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health. Packets include information about two chemicals that have been found wafting from a subterranean plume of pollution into hundreds of homes and businesses in Endicott: trichoroethylene, also known as TCE, and tetrachloroethylene, also known as PCE. IBM Corp. is installing ventilation systems to keep the chemicals out of about 480 structures in a 300-acre area south of its former campus on North Street.
