Pollution tests add to puzzle in Hillcrest

Extent of chemical fumes proves difficult to pinpoint

HILLCREST - The more state scientists learn about pollution in
Hillcrest, the more unanswered questions they have. 

Recent tests show a glimpse of the problem: a subterranean plume of
chemicals forming gases that are entering some homes, a process known as
vapor intrusion. 

It's similar to what's happening in Endicott, where IBM Corp. is
installing ventilation systems to keep fumes out of about 480
properties. 

But it may be another year before scientists know how many homes are
affected in Hillcrest and to what degree. 

The offending chemical is trichloroethylene, known as TCE, widely used
as a cleaning solvent by many area industries. 

So far, testing in Hillcrest has determined that at least three homes
need special vents, similar to radon systems, to prevent
trichloroethylene vapors from intruding. But that number could grow - as
it did in Endicott -- after more buildings are tested or retested later
this year or early next year.
