Perkasie homes ruled safe from TCE

EPA tests of 16 houses find no hazardous chemical vapors.

A federal investigation has concluded residents in 16 Perkasie homes are
not breathing hazardous quantities of the potential cancer-causing
chemical TCE.

The Environmental Protection Agency tested for vapor intrusion
underneath basement slabs of the 16 homes near the Stainless Inc.
property, a contaminated former industrial plant in downtown Perkasie.

The tests for trichloroethylene, or TCE, fumes showed vapor levels below
the federal standard of 4.1 parts per billion, EPA spokesman David
Sternberg said.

Sternberg did not have a range for the results, but said, ''nothing was
close'' to federal screening levels and most tests did not detect vapors.
