The LIU's administrative offices were closed Monday, June 21 after two independent air quality tests revealed levels of the cancer-causing chemical trichloroethene (TCE). Administrators have been and will continue working at the Alternative Learning Center in Plains Township until air quality improves in the Tioga Avenue building. The first air quality test was conducted in January and LIU executive director Mike Ostrowski said last week that the results showed the building was "within acceptable limits." The second test, conducted in May by Matson and Associates of State College at the request of certain employees, found high levels of TCE and lower levels of several chlorinated solvents. Shaun Pardi, a chemist with Matson who conducted the second test, said his firm was asked by LIU employees to review the first test results. "The results of the first test were in line with ours," he said.
