N.Y. reviews Hillcrest information Next step: Air samples will be taken from homes BY TOM WILBER Binghampton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) September 15, 2004 HILLCREST -- State environmental officials have gathered preliminary information from approximately 225 homes in the center of a neighborhood suspected of being above underground pollution to determine which ones are most likely to be affected by fumes. Using that information as a guide, state officials will begin taking indoor air samples from several dozen houses, when residents close up their homes and turn on furnaces, most likely in November or December, said Mary Jane Peachy, an engineer with the state Department of Environmental Conservation. The draw from furnaces in sealed buildings creates conditions that can draw in gases from underground chemicals, especially in homes with porous or cracked foundations. Health officials are reviewing information collected in door-to-door surveys this summer to determine how many of the 225 homes will be included in the next round of testing, said Claire Pospisil, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Health. … for the entire article, see http://www.pressconnects.com/today/news/stories/ne091504s116597.shtml -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 http://www.cpeo.org
