State outlines Hillcrest pollution BY TOM WILBER Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) June 24, 2005 HILLCREST -- Scientists have come a long way in understanding how pollution is affecting homes in this residential neighborhood, but more work is necessary, state officials told about 70 people at a public meeting Thursday evening. Officials from the state departments of Health and Environmental Conservation updated residents on the latest findings of an investigation that began in 1999, shortly after six children in the neighborhood developed cancer. Highlights included: * Contractors should complete work in about 60 days to install ventilation systems beneath about 65 buildings to keep trichloroethylene (TCE) vapors from entering, said Thomas Suozzo, an engineer for the DEC. They also will seal cracks or drains in about 14 homes to keep vapors out. ...
