Somerville signs agreement to develop 160-acre landfill By Stephen Stirling Newark Star-Ledger (NJ) January 17, 2010SOMERVILLE -- Progress has been made in Somerville's efforts to redevelop its 160-acre landfill, a sign officials hope indicates that the economic freeze gripping development in the borough is beginning to thaw. Somerville signed a memorandum of agreement last week with the Somerset County Business Partnership to explore the possibility of turning a portion of the landfill, which closed in 1984 and covers a large area from Bridge Street to Route 206, into a center for life sciences and emerging technologies. "It's taking a positive step towards redevelopment in an economy that is otherwise pretty ratty," Somerville's Economic Development Director Colin Driver said. "It's a bellwether in a sense to what's going on out there." ...
