Proposed tax credits could boost urban redevelopment

Old, vacant buildings that blight cities and towns across Iowa could get new life, with the help of legislation making its way through the Iowa Statehouse, say supporters.

The legislation, Senate File 514, would bump up to $5 million tax credits available to redevelop buildings that are considered brownfield or grayfield properties.

Several properties across the state could benefit, including the former Younkers department store and the Des Moines Building in downtown Des Moines. Both are currently empty.
