New Cleanup Effort in Bayview Hunters Point Durrie Lawrence KQED Radio (San Francisco) July 26, 2012The EPA has awarded $600,000 in grants for further environmental cleanup in San Francisco's Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood. For the next three years, the city will use $400,000 for surveying efforts. They aim to assess how many Brownfield sites there are in the area, and determine how they need to be cleaned up. The EPA defines a brownfield site as a property which may be contaminated by a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Project manager Annie Eng says the work funded by this grant will begin as earlier as October. She says that more than 100 years of industrial activity has created as many as 150 sites in the neighborhood. ...
