Air Force OKs land for FSU By Ryan Burr Bay County News Herald May 23, 2007The U.S. Air Force has agreed to transfer 40 acres of its Lynn Haven fuel depot to Florida State University for a satellite campus likely to offer marine research and crime scene investigation training. A spokesman for U.S. Rep. Allen Boyd, D-Monticello, announced the plan Tuesday via conference call with Lynn Haven officials. The transfer is included in language of the National Defense Authorization Act, which the House has passed, but the Senate has yet to vote on. The city, FSU and Air Force have signed an agreement supporting FSU's use of the 40 acres. ...In 1993, the fuel depot was deactivated, having been used as a fuel support point for the Air Force since 1950. Ten fuel pads are left on the property, and in the last several years, significant environmental cleanup has occurred. Additional petroleum contamination must be removed, Smithwick said. ...
