EPA removes Griffiss land from Superfund list

ROME —
More than 2,800 acres of land at the Griffiss Business and Technology 
Park are ready for development after the Environmental Protection Agency 
removed them from its list of significant hazardous waste sites.

The step, which occurred Friday, is a major milestone that could help 
officials better promote the property, officials said.

"This removes a huge marketing impediment from the area, and opens up 
the area to many more possibilities in terms of growth," said Steve 
DiMeo, president of Mohawk Valley EDGE, a Rome-based economic 
development agency for Oneida and Herkimer counties. "That label is like 
the scarlet letter."

The EPA removed 2,900 of the 3,552 acres at the former Air Force base 
from the National Priorities List, a list of hazardous waste sites 
eligible for cleanup funding under EPA's Superfund  program.
